Vernon’s specialty in working with first responders and their families has been a passion for him for over 10 years.  He enjoys working with this population, specifically related to the cumulative “on-the-job” traumatic events that first responders experience on a regular basis.  In addition, Vernon’s work with first responders includes helping his clients communicate their needs more effectively, while also learning coping skills to help create an overall sense of emotional well-being.

Bernadette Gurney is a Spanish bilingual Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, who received her Bachelors’s in Clinical Psychology from Mount. St. Mary’s University, and her Masters in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Family Therapy at Pepperdine University. Bernadette has worked with unaccompanied minors in shelters, families in the DCFS system, and children, adolescents and families who have experienced deep and painful trauma in their lives. Matt Stephan, LMFT, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, providing therapy services to clients in both our Valencia and Burbank locations. Matt has been practicing therapy since 2015 and has worked with a variety of clients from various cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, and ethnicities. He enjoys working with children, adolescents, teens, adults, couples, and families.

Matt comes to Valencia Relationship Institute with a vast amount of experience from working as a therapist in both residential and outpatient settings.  He has treated clients struggling with depression, anxiety, anger, trauma/crisis, grief and loss, parenting challenges, teen concerns, addiction, and trauma.  Matt also works directly with first responders and front-line workers, who have been involved with traumatic experiences in their professional and personal lives.

Luzzei received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of California-Davis and Master’s of Social Work degree from the University of New England.     Kristen Huntley, ACSW, is an Associate Clinical Social Worker registered with the Board of Behavioral Sciences in California. She graduated from Western New Mexico University in 2018 with her Masters in Social Work. Her professional experience includes working within underserved and underrepresented populations, the LGBTQIA2S+ community, victims of domestic violence. Kristen was instrumental in creating wellness programs for children during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was welcomed and appreciated by many families and mental health professionals during such a difficult time in their lives. In addition, Kristen has been actively involved in providing counseling and support to current and former foster youth who have aged out of the foster care system.

    Lance Steinberg graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and was designated a Rock Sleyster Scholar by the American Medical Association as one of the top ten medical students in the United States in the field of psychiatry. He completed a full residency in pediatrics at UCLA and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, then a fellowship in adolescent medicine with an emphasis on medical-psychiatric interface at Stanford University Hospital and Clinics. Dr. Steinberg then trained in psychiatry at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where he has taught advanced child psychopharmacology, CBT, and self-hypnosis for over twenty years.

    Dr. Steinberg has spoken nationally for CHADD (Children and Adults with ADHD), the Tourette’s Society of America, and the OCD Foundation. He also has lectured at the HELP Group on autistic spectrum issues, and for many educational organizations on unipolar & bipolar disorder and learning disabilities, as well as anxiety disorders (generalized, separation, phobias, post traumatic stress, etc.). Dr. Steinberg is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA (Geffen) School of Medicine and has a private practice in psychiatry/psychopharmacology in Calabasas, Encino, and Valencia. He enjoys doing consultations and treatment of people of all ages, and encourages close working relationships of the treatment team.
